10 Skate & Surf Festival Acts You Should Check Out

Skate and Surf Festival 2014 logo

If you've been living under a rock, the Skate & Surf Festival takes place soon. Saturday, May 17th and Sunday, May 18th at the Asbury Park Oceanfront, to be exact. If you're not sure who to check out besides the main stage acts, you've come to the right place. If you haven't picked up tickets, head here to get them.

1) Animals As Leaders
Animals As Leaders will be bringing some their mindblowing guitar riffs back to Asbury Park. The progressive metal band recently released their third album The Joy Of Motion to positive reviews from Ultimate Guitar and Alternative Press. After Skate & Surf, the band will continue their touring schedule with Conquering Dystopia and fellow Skate & Surf act Chon.

2) United Nations
United Nations vocalist Geoff Rickly is no stranger to the Skate & Surf Festival. His former band Thursday cut their teeth on the event over a decade ago. The Brooklyn based act rarely play shows, but when they do, you can be sure that calamity will ensue.

3) Unlocking The Truth
These youngsters from Brooklyn have accomplished things that people twice their age would only dream of. This year, the band opened for legendary metal act Motorhead and performed at the Coachella Festival. Before their short stint on this summer's Warped Tour, the trio will be bringing their metal onslaught to Asbury Park.

4) Patent Pending

Patent Pending will certainly bring the party vibes to the Dark City. The Long Island pop punk act have been touring overseas in support of their latest album Brighter. Bonus points if you manage to crowdsurf during their set with a box of pizza in hand.

5) Front Porch Step
For those looking for some acoustic songs, look no further than Front Porch Step. Hailing from Ohio, FPS is the acoustic project of Jake Mcelfresh. With some buzz from his Youtube videos, he managed to land a deal with Pure Noise Records (Handguns, The Story So Far) for the release of his debut album Aware.

6) NGHBRS
Long Island alternative rock act NGHBRS have been putting in work since their inception back in 2010. The band found their way opening for acts like Matt & Kim and Third Eye Blind, but it wasn't until their Instagram music video for "Hold Up Girl" when the band garnered press from major publications like The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo! News, and USA Today. The band released their debut album Twenty One Rooms last summer on Paper + Plastick.

New Jersey Talent

The thing that makes Skate & Surf great is its recognition of homegrown talent. In the past, bands like Don't Look Down, Catch 22, and Armor For Sleep took over Convention Hall. This year, Midtown, The Early November, and Hidden In Plain View will obviously be on the top of everyone's "must-see" list. While these three NJ bands will rock faces off for the homestate crowd, four other acts from the Garden State will be giving it their all, too.

7) Lorna Shore
Four piece deathcore outfit Lorna Shore have been building a rapid following in the Garden State for the last four years now. The band recently re-released their Maleficium EP on Density Records. The band will hit up the Skate & Surf festival in the middle of their short tour supporting San Antonio, Texas deathcore act Upon A Burning Body, who will also perform at the festival.

8) Radio Smash
AJ DeMarco & Sal Volo, otherwise known as Radio Smash, have been dazzling fans in the NJ/NY area with their electro house delivery. Performances as The Wellmont Theater, Icon Lounge and Club Envy landed them a residency at GameChanger World. While EDM might seem a little unusual at an event like Skate and Surf, these two will certainly win over some new fans with their engaging live performance.

9) Brick + Mortar
Featured on our 30 New Jersey Music Acts Making Moves list, electro-indie outfit Brick + Mortar will be repping their hometown of Asbury Park big time. You may have heard their music on shows like The Vampire Diaries and So You Think You Can Dance or in the Need For Speed: Rivals video game. The duo are currently on the road with Morning Parade and will have upcoming festival appearances alongside acts such as The Crystal Method, Rise Against, and Cage The Elephant.

10) The Mongoloids
Unfortunately, Skate & Surf will be one of the last times that fans of this New Jersey hardcore act will ever engage in Mongo Stomps. The band recently announced their breakup and will embark on a farewell tour before holding their farewell show on August 23rd at GameChanger World. The band released their debut album Time Trials in 2007 and have embarked on numerous tours around the world with acts like Agnostic Front, Poison The Well, and Death Before Dishonor.
