Interview: Meg Myers

If you've never heard of Meg Myers before, chances are you'll be hearing tons about this LA singer-songwriter in months to come. Along with re-releasing her debut EP on Atlantic Records back in April, she's set to open for the Pixies on a few of their September tour dates. We had a chance to talk to Myers about her upcoming NYC debut, signing with Atlantic Records and filiming the music video for the track "Heart Heart Head".

1) You're set to make your NYC debut at the Mercury Lounge this Wednesday. Are the nerves kicking in yet?

Nah, I'm really busy in the studio and rehearsing so I don't have time to be nervous until the night before the show. I always have a hard time sleeping the night before shows, that's for sure.

2) You're also set to open for the Pixies on a few dates. What are you most looking forward to about that?

Oh my lord... what am I NOT looking forward to about that?!

3) You have some really dedicated fans on the internet. Have you ever had any strange encounters with an ecstatic fan?

Hmmm... I'd rather not say. haha.

4) Your debut EP Daughter In The Choir generated a ton of buzz and landed you on Last Call with Carson Daly. What was that experience like?

That was a great experience. Everybody on Carson was so cool and fun to work with. I think I was pretty nervous but my bad nerves usually turn into good nerves once I start performing. For me, it's always about letting go and getting out of my head.

5) Daughter In The Choir was originally released over a year ago but was re-released this year via Atlantic Records. How did you hook up with the label?

After the release of DITC we encountered a lot of label interest. I think Atlantic was the first label to reach out and in the end, i just felt like they really had the same vision. They've been insanely supportive but also they allow me to do my thang. And that's super important to a stubborn-ass like myself:)

6) What was it like filming the music video for "Heart Heart Head"?

It was cold. For some reason whenever I shoot my music videos it's cold. But aside from being freezing, I really enjoyed working with the director and everybody involved. Elliott is a mastermind and I loved how he got me in the right mode for every scene. My music is heartfelt and intense, so if I can't get in touch with the meaning of the song when I am shooting, then there's no point in making a video for the song. plain and simple.

7) What artists are you currently listening to?

I've been listening to Townes Van Zandt, Randy Travis, Ludovico Einaudi, Enya, NIN and the Cure.

8) Besides the Pixies shows, what else is on your agenda for the rest of 2013?

Writing a muthafuckan album!!
