Review: Har Mar Superstar - "Lady, You Shot Me"

Har Mar Superstar

Almost 50 years ago, Sam Cooke was shot and killed in some motel in Los Angeles. Cooke's final words were "lady, you shot me", which is a statement that now acts as the title of Har Mar Superstar's soulful tribute to the late, great crooner.

The Brooklyn via St. Paul singer's new single takes the shape of a 60s pop classic with modern recording gloss. The tune jumps from a downtempo soul hook featuring the track's title to an upbeat motown sway-inducing section, where Superstar successfully pulls off overly simple lines ("back into your heart/never again apart/and you won't forget me"). If it's not the Cult Records singer's undying love for Cooke that resulted in this instantly transfixing cut, expect that some spiritual mischief was involved.
