Interview: Hyro Da Hero

Hyro Da Hero (aka Hyron Fenton) have been spitting thought provoking rhymes since 2007 with his first mixtape Gangsta Rock. His "Tupac meets Refused" style of hip-hop has landed him on numerous festivals including Download Festival, Soundwave Festival and this summer's Vans Warped Tour. He's set to perform at Japan's Summer Sonic Festival this weekend with acts such as Green Day, Gotye and Death Cab For Cutie. The rapper took some time to talk about his upcoming performance in Japan, his latest album Birth, School, Work, Death and his recent gig at Warped.

1) You recently wrapped up Warped Tour. How did that go?

It was absolutely amazing. I had a chance to make new fans and spread my music to different audiences. Other bands showed me a lot of love which made the experience even better. It was like a party everyday.

2) Did you attend Warped Tour in the past?

I never did. I use to always want to go just so I could give my demo/mixtape out to everyone. Now my first time attending I'm actually rocking the stage. Its a dream come true. A platform for me to let everyone feel the Hyro experience.

3) How are you taking all of the positive remarks towards your latest album?

I love it. I never expected to get such great reviews. I never thought about reviews period. I just wanted to make a sick ass album. I'm glad people appreciate it.

4) You're set to perform at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan. What are you looking forward to about that?

Bringing my music to another continent is the ultimate prize. I feel like I won a contest. I'm looking forward to show Japan what Gangsta Rock is all about.

5) The music videos for "Sleeping Giants" and "We Still Popular" were directed by Sitcom Soldiers. How did that come about?

Those guys are amazing. I met them through Sean Smith of The Blackout. He is such a huge supporter. They created the video for the song Higher and Higher that I was featured on. I love working with them.

6) What music are you currently listening to?

Right now I'm currently rocking out to Z-Ro. He is a legend in Houston. The music and lyrics is straight up real. Ya'll should check it out.

7) What's in store for Hyro Da Hero for the rest of 2012?

Touring, touring, touring. I want to get my music in front of as many people as possible.
