Interview: Screaming Females

Screaming Females

Screaming Females are set to release their fifth studio album Ugly on April 3rd via Don Giovanni Records. The New Brunswick band will embark on a short tour to SXSW (which kicks off this Sunday at the Stone Pony) before heading on a full U.S. run in April. In our brief interview, vocalist/guitarist Marissa Paternoster and bassist King Mike talk about their new record, new music video and Sunday's show with Titus Andronicus. Check it out below.

1) What was it like filming the music video for "It All Means Nothing"?

Marissa: It was great fun.  We made up the story and organized the entire operation ourselves. We had every opportunity to pet and cuddle several adorable cats.

Mike:  We thought the cats would be a lot harder to work with, but they ended up being really good sports.  I don't know why I ever thought it would be hard to get them to do their favorite thing which is getting attention from humans.

2) Screaming Females are set to release Ugly in April. What was the recording process like for this record?

Marissa: Simply put: we spent a long time arranging the songs, so when it came time to record, we set up our instruments in a room and played our songs.  That is what the process was like.

Jarrett: Record was focused and kind of intense. We lived in the studio for 10 days and worked on the record with pretty much every waking hour.

3) How do you think this album will differ from previous releases?

Marissa: I can't really say.  I think I'm too involved.

Mike: GATEFOLD!!!

4) What are some of your favorite tracks off the record?

Marissa: Yeesh, I can't really say...I mean...I'm just too involved in the record.  Every song has a particular uniqueness to me that makes it interesting.  Perhaps asking a more objective source would illicit a better answer.

Mike: I think all of the songs are really strong.  The song, Red Hand, kind of fell into our laps and I really like that one because it's funky and bass heavy (duh.)

5) The band is set to perform with Titus Andronicus at the Stone Pony. What are you most looking forward to about that show?

Mike: I am looking forward to walking on the beach before the show.

6) What are some of your favorite venues to perform at when on tour?

Mike: I like to play at venues that, like the Stone Pony, are across the street from the beach.

Jarrett: Screaming Females has a rule about venues that we like to play: We like venues that are fun filled with people who care about music.

7) What''s next for the band after this U.S. tour?

Marissa: Writing some new songs!

Mike: Some more tours

We're currently running a contest giving away 5 pairs of tickets to this Sunday's show at the Stone Pony. Info on that can be found here.
