7 Best Christmas Songs of 2012

Merry Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner we decided to go ahead and put together a list of the best xmas songs, covers and performances we've come across this year. Along with the seven below, a couple honorable mentions include Los Campesinos!'s "A Doe To A Deer" and The Killers' "I Feel It In My Bones" featuring Ryan Pardey. Happy holidays, everyone!

7. Sufjan Stevens - "Holly Jolly Christmas"

Sufjan StevensIf you don't have the time to listen to his 58 track Christmas mixtape, then trust that one of the collection's standouts is Stevens unique take on a true holiday classic. You can stream Silver & Gold in full over at bandcamp.

6. Damien Jurado - "Kalla Hus"

Damien JuradoOne of the two original tunes on the list, singer-songwriter Damien Jurado sculpted a melancholy ballad with Seattle musician Kyle Zantos. Led by piano and accompanied by horns and strings,"Kalla Hus" is one beautifully-crafted downer.

5. The xx - "Last Christmas"

The xx logoMaybe it could have done without the light dub wobbles, but Oliver and Romy's voices are too damn moving to not make any cover they do worth a few listens. Plus, credit is due for taking on a Wham song. Stream the cover below, thanks to BBC Radio 1.

4. Why? - "The Water You Walk"

Why rap groupAfter releasing a new EP and full-length this year, Yoni and crew still couldn't resist putting out a holiday-themed track that is the most standout original of all the 2012 released numbers. Honestly, it's better than a lot of the tunes making of their recent efforts. So go ahead and enjoy the indie rap act bringing the xmas vibes.

3. Fruit Bats - "It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas"

Fruit Bats bandProbably the most traditionally executed on the list, Fruit Bats bring a gentle, folk-leaning take on the seasonal stable "It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas". Between Johnson's breezy vocals, the beautiful strings and delicate acoustic backbone the cut may be one you return to next year.

2. Gabriel Bruce - "Silent Night"

Gabriel BruceAs proven on his Hot New Track-certified "Perfect Weather" single, which is one of our favorite tracks of the year, Gabriel Bruce has a voice to be reckoned with. The English crooner displays his vocal talents even more so on his emotive rendition of the xmas classic "Silent Night". Be sure to grab the free download by clicking through the player below.

1. Peace - "All I Want For Christmas" / "Creep"

Peace band

A BBC radio session mashup for the ages, UK newcomers Peace put the lyrics of Mariah Carey's impossibly catchy "All I Want For Christmas" to the music of one of the greatest songs of all time, Radiohead's "Creep" and the results are surprisingly victorious.
