Interview: Slightly Stoopid

Find out what to expect from their upcoming tour. Since forming in 1995, Slightly Stoopid have garnered a large fanbase worldwide due to their strong DIY ethic. The band have released 8 albums on their own record label entitled Stoopid Records with over 700,000 albums sold so far. You might have also seen them on the road with acts like Snoop Dogg, Blink-182 and Dave Matthews Band or caught them performing at Coachella and Lollapalooza. Their unique blend of reggae, blues, ska and punk have also led them to perform numerous sold-out shows overseas in places such as Japan, United Kingdom, Australia and the Dominican Republic.

Now the band is in the studio working on their new record before heading out on their summer tour with Rebelution and Swayze & Cisco Adler. Drummer Ryan Moran took some time to talk about the new record, their upcoming tour and gives advice for those wanting to tour for lengthy periods of time.

1) The band is currently working on new material. How is that going?

It's going really well.  We built our own studio in San Diego about a year ago and have been doing the majority of the work there.  We have always worked in high end studios that are fairly costly, and now that we have our own spot, we have been taking it slowly.  It's been nice to record and refine, then re-record again.  I think the album is going to sound great.

2) What can Slightly Stoopid fans expect from it?

More of us. Every Slightly album is different, as each one is a snap shot taken in time.  Some good music, punk, reggae, ska, rock happiness.

3) What is the band most looking forward to about their summer tour?

Just being out there music and hanging out with our fans...

4) What are some of your favorite venues to perform at whenever you hit up NJ?

We love playing at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.  The House of Blues in A.C. has been good to us as well.

5) What are your thoughts about New Jersey?

I love it. Great people, great Italian food, great parties.

6) Do you have any fond (or not so fond) memories from playing NJ in the past?

It's always fun to be on the shore...

7) The band recently performed at the Summer Solstice concert in Alaska. How did that go?

It went really well.  We had great weather, and had a chance to hang with some locals who took us out on hikes and to some good bars and restaurants.  We had a ball there.

8) What bands are you currently listening to?

9) Slightly Stoopid have been on the road non-stop for several years. What advice would you give to bands that want to hit the road for long periods of time?

The band has actually been on tour constantly since it's inception (15+ years).  I would say to younger bands trying to do this that there's no substitute for hard work.  All success demands sacrifice and ups and downs.  If you want to create a following that will stick with you, get out on the road and work.

10) What's next for the band after the tour?

We will be finishing up our album and taking some time off.
