Interview: The Lonely Forest

The Lonely Forest

Indie rock band The Lonely Forest released their third album Arrows last month and are set to take the country by storm. The band is currently on their U.S. tour with The Joy Formidable and will open for Death Cab For Cutie on their sold out June tour. Guitarist Tony Ruland talked about a few things including the band's recent performance at SXSW and opening for Death Cab For Cutie.

1) What was the writing/recording process for the new album Arrows?

The songs had been slowly collected & put together throughout late '09 and early '10. It's the first time we ever did pre-production in preparing to record. I really think that helped the songs evolve.

2) How does this record differ from the band's previous material?

To me, the material is far more eclectic than on our previous records - lots more variety in tones, styles, etc.

3) The band is currently on tour with The Joy Formidable. How is that going?

The tour is going excellent!  We love THEM dearly. They are sooooooo good live too.

4) After this tour wraps up, you'll be going on tour with Death Cab For Cutie. What are you most looking forward to about that tour?

I grew up loving that band - from seeing some of their first shows ever, to watching them now as they play arenas. The tour is going to be very surreal.

5) The band performed at this year's SXSW festival. What's one of the best things about playing that festival?

It's super hectic, and the free beer is easily the best part. The rest is fairly intense, yet still fun.

6) Are there any bands that you think people should check out?

Lately I've been really into The Black Ryder, doves, The National, and The Globes.

7) What are the band's plans after the D.C.F.C. tour?

I'm getting married this summer! ...Other than that, mostly getting ready for more tours.

8) Are there any bands that you'd like to tour with in the future?

So many: Nada Surf, Foo Fighters, doves, etc..... The list is endless

If you weren't lucky enough to get tickets for their upcoming shows with Death Cab For Cutie, you can still catch The Lonely Forest on their tour with The Joy Formidable. The tour will make its way to Webster Hall on April 29th.
