Interview: Unwritten Law

Unwritten Law

San Diego band, Unwritten Law have been rocking the globe for years and see no signs of slowing down just yet. The band will be releasing their new album Swan on March 29th via Suburban Noize Records. They'll also be a part of this year's Vans Warped Tour. Bassist Pat "PK" Kim took some time to answer questions about the new record and the band's past experiences on Warped Tour.

1) How excited is the band about the release of Swan?

It's been almost 6 years since we've put out new material so as you can imagine everyone is pretty excited, anxious and relieved for this thing to finally come out. It's been a long time coming and we went through alot of obstacles to finish this thing.

2) What was the recording process for the album?

Bit hellish. We recorded this album twice before finally hitting it on the 3rd try. Let's just say it was a pretty heartless effort until we finally all synced in with each other and got it right. I guess it's true when they say 3rd time is the charm.

3) The band released the first single "Starships and Apocalypse". What was the inspiration behind that song?

Can't really answer that one. Scott wrote the lyrics to that song, so not sure what mental trip to the moon he was on when he came up with that one...Still don't think he's back yet!

4) What was it like working with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien on the track "chicken(ready to go)?"

Unfortunately I was not at scott's crib when del showed up. From how scott describes it, he (del) just showed up at his crib with some roscoe's chicken & waffles and was just kind of chillin'. Oddly enough, "chicken (ready to go)" was the last song on the album that scott had to do and he just had a mental block with that song. He couldn't finish it for the life of him. He asked del if he was interested in throwing down on a track and he played him "chicken". Luckily del liked it from the go and said he wanted to lay some shit down on that track and wah-la, a bit of history was made. Funny that "chicken" was already called "chicken" before del even showed up with roscoe's chicken n' waffles...Guess it was meant to be.

5) How will this album compare to previous Unwritten Law albums?

It won't.

6) The band is set to play Warped Tour this summer. How excited is everybody about that?

Been over a decade since we have done warped tour last. To be honest with you, I didn't really like it then & I doubt that I will like it now. It really has nothing to do with the tour itself, the warped tour is a pretty kick ass concept. However, the conditions are what really makes it hard. It's like a 100 degrees the whole tour and you are also usually stuck in the middle of nowhere so there really is no shelter or anywhere to go except for staying couped up in your bus. Luckily we have a bus...I feel sorry for the bands having to do that shit in a van. Plus, there is nowhere to shit and shower comfortably and that just doesn't fly for me. To be honest with you, I also haven't heard of any of the bands on this years warped tour. I guess that's how out of the loop I've been when it comes to the music that is out right now. Gonna feel like being at a daycare I imagine. Either way, we're gonna make the best of it and rock the shit and have fun regardless...Dig?

7) What were some memorable Warped Tour experiences from the past?

I was so fucked up for the majority of the tour that I really don't remember much...Except maybe us getting kicked off the warped tour in australia for causing a major food storm during our set.

8) Does the band have any memorable experiences from playing New Jersey?

No. Still waiting to run into bon jovi & the boss.

9) Are there any touring plans set after Warped Tour?

Of course. Nothing has been set in stone yet but there will be much touring.

10) What bands would you like to tour with in the future?

I know this is a long shot but...Slayer!

Catch Unwritten Law at Warped Tour on July 21st at Susquehanna Bank Center and July 24th at Monmouth Park Raceway.
