Jeff was recently awarded 3rd Place with his photo of Buddy Nielsen of Senses Fail in The NJ Underground's 1st Annual Photo Contest. With the contest fresh in all of our minds, we wanted to touch base with each of the photographers who won to learn a bit more about them. Interview and photo critique below.

Tell us a little about yourself (education, hobbies, background):

I am 22 about to turn 23 in January. I find myself to be lucky to be born on the same day as Kid Rock, Al Capone, Muhhamed Ali, Benjamin Franklin, Jim Carrey, Zoey Deschanel, Michelle Obama, and saving the best for last, my Mom. :) I am 100% Chinese and grew up in Wayne, NJ my whole life.  I'm currently studying Information Technology: Multimedia at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ and work in the Instructional Technology Media and Services Department as a Graphic Designer and Web Developer. I became a photographer starting out as a hobby. I like the art and feel when creating a photo and analyzing it. My father is a big video guy and I grew up watching him record a lot family and friends get togethers, such as karaoke parties (very cliche since I'm Asian). I feel like it was a passion that was passed on from my father to me. On my free time I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, playing the piano, hanging out with friends, and helping others.

Your camera and lens set-up when photographing a concert:

I own a Canon Rebel T1i and use the EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens with a cover and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens for most of my concert photography. I also have a Canon EF 75-300MM f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens, which I like using for nature shots or for getting close shots where I am far away.

If you had to choose one lens, which one would it be and why?

If I had to pick one lens, I would pick the EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens because it's takes clean photos.

If you had to choose your favorite concert that you've shot, which would it be and why?

My favorite concert I shot was the Senses Fail and Bayside concert at the Starland Ballroom, NJ in November because it was an awesome atmosphere to be in and the the bands (Balance and Composition, Title Fight) that opened up for them were sick!

What do you feel is the most challenging thing about photographing live performances and concerts?

The most challenging thing about photographing live performances and concerts is trying to find the perfect spot so you can take a cool shot, and also good lighting.

What would you like to be doing in 5 years time from now?

I'm hoping in 5 years I will be in working in the advertising media industry in NYC or California. Also I am hoping to successfully launch my own e-commerce startup company.

Something you’re still learning?

I am still learning new ways and techniques of designing and web development.

Buddy Nielsen, Senses Fail

I chose this photo because I like the angle that Buddy Nielsen, lead singer from Senses Fail is portrayed in this shot with the bright lights shining behind him. For some reason it reminds me of a hardcore punk Elvis.

Buddy Nielsen, Senses Fail

I like this photo because of emotion on Buddys face shouting in the microphone, also the light behind him looks like a sun with beaming rays. It looks like he is going super saiyan. :p

The guitarist from Bayside just looks gnarly rocking out.
