Band Spotlight: Bayside

Bayside band

NYC's own Bayside has been embraced by many for their infectous melodies and honest lyrics. After releasing four albums on Victory Records, the band signed with Wind-Up Records and started recording their fifth album with acclaimed producer Gil Norton (Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Dashboard Confessional). I had a chance to speak with Bayside's lead singer Anthony Raneri about recording the new album and their upcoming tour with Senses Fail.

1) The band recently signed with Wind Up Records. How did the band land on that label?

When our contract ended with Victory, we spent some time speaking with different labels. Wind Up was the first label we spoke to and we loved what they had to say and their dedication to music above business. After a few awkward meetings with other labels, we knew Wind Up was the one that felt like home.

2) What's the writing process like for the new record?
We're used to writing records on the road in a matter of weeks and rushing into the studio. With this record we really wanted to push ourselves and make the record of our lives. We spent about 9 months, mostly at home and in the studio writing. Some songs have been re-written 7 or 8 times before we decided they were good enough to make the cut. I would call the writing process pretty meticulous, which is something we've never tried.

3) How is it working with producer Gil Norton?
It was incredible. Gil is one of those living legends in rock music. He is one of those guys that you hear about that when he is in the room, the juices just flow. His presence and ideas and coaching really brings a band to another level.

4) How did the band acquire him as the producer?
We were making a list of producers that we thought would make sense for the kind of record we wanted to make. We had 2 lists. A list of people that would be a dream come true but would probably say no and then a list of backups that were more realistic. Gil was on that list of guys that had made some of our favorite records of all time but would probably say no. We figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. He wound up really liking he band a lot and we made it work.

5) How will the new material compare to the band's past material?
We tried to make it Bayside x10. We took everything that we are and made it more over the top and more extreme. It's our most technical, catchiest, most intense record without a doubt.

6) When will the new album come out?
We're hoping for a February 2011 release.

7) The band will be going on tour this fall with Senses Fail. How did that come about?
We have been friends with Senses Fail for a while and I think we share a lot of fans. I think it's been a long time coming.

8) How were Title Fight and Balance and Composure chosen as support?

When Buddy from Senses Fail and I spoke about bands to take on the tour, we agreed off the bat that we just wanted to take some up and coming bands that we really liked musically and that would really appreciate and deserve a shot at a bigger tour. I've been listening to both bands for a little while now so it was a no brainer. It's always a real pleasure when you can take out bands that you're a true fan of.

9) Will Bayside play any new songs on tour?

Yes. We're planning on debuting some new stuff on the tour.

10) How has the band's touring experience changed over the years?

I think we're having more fun on tour than we have in a few years. We feel like we're hitting a stride as a live band that has gotten really exciting. We feel like we have been experiencing the shows with wonder and excitement the way the fans do. We have actually scaled back some of the comforts and production on tour to help us get back to that "anything can happen" mindset that made tour fun in the first place.

11) What are some of the band's favorite spots to play in New Jersey?

I've always had a soft spot for Maxwells. We haven't been able to play there as a band in a long time but we actually go there just to eat and hang out whenever we can. There's a really great vibe there.

12) What are some touring plans for when the new album comes out?

Right when the album comes out we'll be doing a bunch of international stuff. We're not sure what our first US tour will be post release yet, but it will be something fun.

I am really excited for the new album on a new label... I know after being with a certain label for a period of time, you can become stagnant in your music. Bayside has definitely tried to be more progressive in their sounds throughout the years. I am stoked to hear how the new stuff will compare to the old stuff... I would love to hear more of a return to sounds like "Phone Call from Poland" and Peanut... Quality classics that evoked so much energy and emotion... Can't wait for them to make it to sunny San Diego in Nov. (Senses Fail will be awesome to see too!)
