When The Love Language opened their set with a cover of The Zombies "This Will Be Our Year" I knew it would be a good night. I'll admit first off any "review" I do of a Love Language performance will come with a bit of a bias as I'm a pretty big fan of both their records. I came across the groups debut self-titled record a couple weeks before CMJ this past fall and immediately made it a priority to catch their show at The Bell House during the music conference. I remember an overly packed stage of 7 musicians charmingly trying their best to properly to work out their 3-4 part harmonies while playing to a room of 40 or so people.

Less then a year later the group has a new record, trimmed down line-up and a sold out show at Manhattan's Mercury Lounge. In the case of The Love Language more doesn't equal better as the somewhat newly formed line-up has made their live sound enormously more satisfying, even pulling off their more complex numbers such as "Blue Angel" and "Pedals" flawlessly. After an abridged Zombies cover the group jumped into their set with two songs off their newly released Libraries, then into two off their 09' debut. The group went on to play every song they've released with the exception of "Two Rabbits", adding "Stars" and "Night Dogs" at the last minute to their encore. The crowd favorites of the night seemed to be "Providence", "Heart To Tell", "Sparxxx" and "Lalita". With "Lalita" sending the crowd into havoc.

Overall the North Carolina quintet, who were clearly in good spirits, put on a performance you'd except to see from a band that is about to get a whole lot bigger. At the rate things have been going for them recently I wouldn't count on being lucky enough to catch them in venues the size of Mercury Lounge for long. It should come without saying that if you haven't yet, you should pick up not one, but both of the groups records, which you can do so at all major online retailers. The night's setlist along with a video of "Lalita" can be found below.

pretty sure this has nothing to do with nj, but at least they have good taste in music.

Amazing show! Obviously the set list couldn't have been better and the sound at Mercury Lounge was great as usual. Can't wait to catch TLL again.
