On the eve of another Thanksgiving, the packed crowd at the Starland Ballroom was thankful for great times listening to great music as they waited to see duel headliners Senses Fail and Bayside. While the crowd rode heavily in favor of the two main headliners, the night’s openers had the unenviable task of setting the crowd up for the kill. Balance & Composure started out the night sending thumping bass lines and fuzzy guitar logic into the crowd. The Doylestown natives looked a bit uneasy in front of a restless crowd but shone brightly with tracks like “Kaleidoscope” and “Burden” which encompassed the all too brief but thrilling set.

Following a stirring start up, Kingston, PA natives Title fight took to the stage with a third of the crowd holding up their work boots with support. The school yard charm of their youthful appearance paled in comparison to their energetic stage show which featured tracks like “Western Haikus,” “Loud and Clear,” and fan favorite “Memorial Field.” The lead singer left enough innocence in the set to tie his shoe as the band closed out their performance. As they exited the stage, the band’s post show glow reminded me why I should’ve stuck to playing guitar in high school.

Bayside took to the stage first bringing the heat on this cold November night and they did so with gusto. Pounding through a set that covered their already full catalog, the Long Island group was poised to remind the audience of their long and hallowed journey. Songs like “Blame it On Bad Luck” and “Tortures of the Damned” were reminders of their heartbreaking beginnings while newer songs like “I Think I’ll Be O.K.” and “Duality” were the showcase of growth and progression in a band pushing a decade of live music. A new track “Already Gone” was a sign of things to come as the group’s fifth album is scheduled for release in February 2011.

As the night wound down, the crowd heated up once more as Jersey natives Senses Fail brought their A game to Starland. Starting out to a thunderous rendition of “Shark Attack,” the band owned the Jersey crowd, mixing old favorites like “Bite to Break the Skin” and “Bone Crusher” with tracks from their recently released fifth album, “The Fire.” On hand was a camera crew capturing the band for a forthcoming music video, to which the film crew couldn’t have picked a better night to catch the group’s raw energy.  Pulsating through old favorites like “Buried a Lie” and the closer, “187,” Senses Fail was easily welcomed home once again. The Bergen County quintet finished off a night that left music fans thirsty and hungry for holiday festivities the following day.
