Steel Train @ Maxwell's 12.30.09

Steel Train live in Hoboken

nate ruess playing with Steel Train

Steel Train stopped by Maxwell's this past week to play two sold-out holiday shows. These home-town performances weren't just like any-other for the group. Tuesday (12/29) Steel Train debuted some new material and focused on songs off their latest record Trampoline. Wednesday (12/30) was a show where fans got to vote on which songs they'd like to see Steel Train perform. The list featured every song they have ever put out plus a slew of covers, some of which they have already released and others they have never performed or recorded.

This show came with much anticipation after their All Points West appearance was canceled back in August due to inclement weather. Luckily this time around the show was indoors and at a much more intimate venue. In the six times I've seen Steel Train since their formation in 2002, I've yet to be let down once. This past Wednesday was no different and was actually my favorite performance yet. Over the years the group has refined their live performance, taking out some of the over indulgent parts, while still rightfully displaying their ability as great musicians.

Though I wasn't able to keep track of all of Steel Train's setlist, it did feature:

I Feel Weird
Kill Monsters in the Rain (most voted)
Alone On the Sea
Better Love
A Magazine
Road Song

The group also covered:

Queen/Bowie - Under Pressure (w/ Nate Ruess)
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

I had a great time, even though I would have liked to see some more old songs. Scenes from an... was amazing!
